Those requesting an absentee ballot for the June 23 Primary Election must do so before the end of the day Monday.

So far, the Daviess County Clerk’s Office has received 14,400 requests for absentee ballots and they have sent out 11,617, according to Chief Deputy Clerk Richard House.

Both House and County Clerk Leslie McCarty said the process for receiving absentee ballots has gone smoothly this year. With 10-12 poll workers and six additional staff members manning the booths, House and McCarty said extra manpower has helped pave the way for a successful Primary Election.

So far, 763 people have also voted in-person at the Daviess County Courthouse.

This year’s voter turnout is predicted to be higher than average, which is typically around 20 percent for a primary.

“If [all the applications come back] that’ll put us over 20 percent,” McCarty said. “I also think we’ll be surprised with the turnout at the Owensboro Sportscenter (on Election Day). People don’t want to mail their ballots in. People want to make sure their votes count.”

The Clerk’s Office is advocating for residents to request ballots online at GoVoteKY.com or by calling 270-240-5771. However, residents can also place absentee votes at the Courthouse 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday.

On Election Day, the Sportscenter will serve as the only voting location in Daviess County. Polls will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.

All registered Republicans and Democrats are eligible to request an absentee ballot in this year’s election.

Both House and County Clerk Leslie McCarty have offered reassurance regarding the high number of absentee ballots in comparison to past elections.

“There are all these levels of security,” House said. “We’re making sure people aren’t voting for others by validating signatures. Our thing is all about integrity during the election.”
