Oasis Women’s Shelter recently received a $10,000 grant from the Junior League of Owensboro.

Stacey Davis, president of the Junior League of Owensboro, said the community initiative grant is open to nonprofits every year. After they receive applications, they narrow down to groups to four finalists.

This year the finalists were the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club, Oasis, The Salvation Army, and the Western Kentucky Refugee Mutual Assistance Society, Inc.

Oasis will be using the grant funds to renovate several areas of their facility.

OASIS women’s shelter is a domestic violence program for battered women and their dependent children.

“We are so happy to be able to help this nonprofit,” Davis said. “We can’t wait to see how they update their shelter.”

Davis said the Junior League has a focus on empowering women, family, and community, and they use these criteria when choosing a grant recipient.

She said any nonprofit organizations who missed out on applying for the grant this year can fill out an application on JLO’s website for next year.

The grant money comes from various fundraisers the organization holds including its annual Charity Ball, Davis said.

“The Junior League is all about volunteerism and making our community a better place,” she said. “It is important for us to help other nonprofits succeed. When we help each other is makes our community better.”
