Spectrum technicians are continuing to work on restoring service to some customers after a garage fire melted two significant bundles of fiber optic cables in Owensboro on Sunday evening.

Some customers regained operations after an initial bundle was repaired, though some are still without service while the second bundle continues to be worked on. An estimated time for the second bundle to be repaired is not yet known, according to a Spectrum spokesperson.

The spokesperson said crews first responded and began making repairs Sunday evening.

It originally appeared only one bundle had been affected, according to the spokesperson. When crews got cables replaced, they found a second significant bundle of fiber optic cables that was also impacted.

Fiber optic cables are incredibly thin — similar to a strand of hair — and hundreds have to be reconnected within a single bundle. With a fire, the cables melt together, so it can be time-consuming to figure out which ones go together.

Crews are continuing to work on splicing the cables back together in the second bundle and will work through the night until the issue is resolved.

Residential and commercial customers in Owensboro, Livermore and Beaver Dam were impacted.
