Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the driver’s license office has been inundated with phone calls and messages regarding Daviess County residents’ attempts and struggles to renew their licenses and identification cards.

Circuit Court Clerk Jennifer Hardesty Besecker broke down the ins and outs of renewing a driver’s license, driver’s permit, CDL license or identification card during this period of time.

For those who can’t seem to reach anyone at the driver’s license office, Besecker said the issue likely boils down to timing.

The office can only take phone calls Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-noon and from 1-3 p.m. Besecker added that the driver’s license office has not been able to add any more phone lines and they don’t have the ability to transfer phone lines.

Confusion regarding mail-in forms, walk-ins and in-person appointments has been another stressor for the community because the regulations have changed several times over the last few months.

At this time, walk-ins are not allowed.

As explained by Besecker, those who need to call the driver’s license office at 270-687-7225 to make an appointment are as follows:

  • Anyone who’s license, identification card, or driver’s permit expired before March 1, 2020
  • Those who need to obtain their CDL license
  • Those who’ve had a name change, by either marriage or divorce
  • Those who’ve changed their address
  • Those who’ve transferred to Daviess County from out of state

Appointments will be made on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are reserved for permit testing.

Those whose driver’s licenses have been expired or suspended for a year or longer must call and make an appointment to retake their permit test.

Those who need to take a road test for their driver’s license must make an appointment with Kentucky State Police by calling 270-683-9932 on Mondays and Fridays, or by visiting their website at kentuckystatepolice.org

Those who are eligible to renew their license, driver’s permit or identification card through the mail-in option include:

  • Those who don’t need to obtain their CDL license
  • Those who don’t need to change their address
  • Those who don’t need to change their name
  • Those whose license, permit or I.D. card expired between March 1, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2020.

These individuals can obtain their remote application form here and mail the completed form to:
