The City of Owensboro and Daviess County Fiscal Court have been approved for CARES Act reimbursements totaling nearly $6 million allocated toward COVID-19 expenses that weren’t part of local governments’ budgets.

In May, it was determined Fiscal Court was eligible for a $3.4 million CARES Act reimbursement. Roughly $1.5 million has been approved thus far, and the funds must be spent before the last day of the fiscal year —  June 30, 2021.

Judge-Executive Al Mattingly said Fiscal Court will again apply for the rest of their reimbursement amount in the fall. In May, Mattingly said the $3.4 million reimbursement was “a good deal, if we can use it,” saying Fiscal Court had nowhere near that amount of money in their account to pay for their COVID-19-related expenses.

“It’s a bonus that we were able to be reimbursed for those expenses,” Mattingly said.

The reimbursement Fiscal Court received was deposited in the County’s general fund, he added.

City Manager Nate Pagan said Owensboro was approved last Friday for the $4.3 million reimbursement they were eligible for in May. As with Fiscal Court, that money will go toward “front-facing employees” that pertain to public safety, such as police officers, firefighters and first responders working for AMR Ambulance.
