A groundbreaking ceremony held Tuesday brought out dozens of people to celebrate the extension of Fairview Drive.
The 2,600-foot road extension will span from the current terminus in the Downs Subdivision to the intersection of KY 603 and Hayden Road, and it will serve as the primary access to the new Daviess County Middle School and other developing property.
The $3 million project is a public-private collaboration between the City of Owensboro; Daviess County Public Schools; Senior Green, LLC; and Professional Properties and Construction.
Mayor Tom Watson said a $500,000 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet grant was secured for the project during former Gov. Matt Bevin’s last days in office.
“The extension will enhance the transportation network in this area, especially when the widening of Highway 54 begins,” Watson said. “It will serve as a way to alleviate traffic during and after the highway widens.”
The road extension allowed for a City annexation of an additional 49.28 acres and has an expected completion date of December 2021.
