OPD: Owensboro man charged with attempted murder of police officer

Update: Owensboro Police Department has identified Officer Austin Esther as the officer injured in this incident is Officer Austin Esther. He was treated for his injuries at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and released to recover at home.

An Owensboro man is facing multiple charges including attempted murder of a police officer after an incident Sunday afternoon, according to the Owensboro Police Department.

According to a release from OPD, at approximately 4:09 p.m. officers from the Owensboro Police Department responded to the 700 block of Walnut Street on a disturbance. Officers were attempting to take Harold Sanders, Jr., 31 into custody for an outstanding warrant when he allegedly became combative, produced a knife, and stabbed one officer in the face before being taken into custody. 

Sanders is being charged with attempted murder of a police officer, second-degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and his outstanding warrant. 

The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries from this assault.
