After several months of preliminary work, paving began this week on the Owensboro Sportscenter parking lot redesign, and the project is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.

Laura Alexander, general manager for the Sportscenter, said the project was coming along “quite nicely.”

“We had a lot of pre-work to do with moving light poles, reconstructing the entrances and prepping the grassy area where the former ice rink was located,” Alexander said. “Now you will notice the progress moving rapidly, pending weather conditions.”

Between the Sportscenter and Edge Ice Center, 178 parking spaces will be added, bringing the total number of spots to 960.

Aisles between parking spots and the entrances to the lot will be widened as well. Instead of being angled, the parking spots will be straight.

The parking lot redesign will also include new landscaping, which will be installed throughout the parking lot.

Alexander said COVID-19 hadn’t placed any setbacks on the project thus far, though rain had caused a few delays here and there.

“If the weather cooperates, we should be finished in plenty of time before basketball season gets underway,” Alexander said. “For the attendees, it will be much easier to navigate in and out of the lot and gives us almost 1,000 parking spaces between the Sportscenter and Edge Ice Center.”
