Nearly 28 miles of county-maintained roads were scheduled to be resurfaced through Spring 2021 at the beginning of Daviess County Fiscal Court’s fiscal year. Already, more than 12 miles of roadways have been resurfaced, with another 16 miles left to complete.
This year’s resurfacing project had to be reduced compared to county road resurfacing projects of the past. Last year, Fiscal Court received a $651,000 grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) that allowed them to complete the county’s largest resurfacing project in years.
That grant went toward resurfacing four roads — Stevens School, Lake Forest, Yelvington-Grandview and Greenbriar. Other roadways were resurfaced in east, central and west Daviess County — without a reimbursement from the KYTC grant — totaling just more than 43 miles.
“This is less mileage than we’ve resurfaced over the last six, seven years,” said Judge-Executive Al Mattingly.
However, Mattingly added that while Fiscal Court budgeted for 28 miles of resurfacing projects, he believed they’d be able to do more than that.
“KYTC’s revenues have been up. I think we’ll actually do between 30 to 33 miles this year,” he said. “If we pave 30 miles of road a year, your roads are on an 18-year paving cycle.”
Mattingly said not all county roads would be resurfaced within the 18-year period. Roadways conducive to heavier traffic — such as county highways — would come before roadways in subdivisions, he said.
“I can guarantee we have paved more roads than most western Kentucky counties,” he said.
The project began on July 1, 2020, and should be completed by the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2021.
