Owensboro Police Department is investigating a deadly house fire that occurred Tuesday afternoon. Officials said one person was found dead on scene, while another later died at the hospital.

Kentucky State Police is doing a supplemental investigation. OPD Public Information Officer Andrew Boggess said while there aren’t signs of arson in the early stages of investigation, OPD has requested the state police arson investigators.

“Although we don’t suspect arson at this point, we can’t rule it out,” Boggess said.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m., when Owensboro Fire Department responded to a single-family dwelling in the area of Yosemite Drive and Ewing Road.

“The first arriving units found light smoke showing,” Battalion Chief Steve Leonard said. “They made an anterior investigation and determined a mattress in one of the bedrooms was fully involved with fire.”

Leonard said OFD crews found a man deceased on the mattress. After a primary search, crews found a woman in a bedroom across the hall in another bedroom. She was removed from the house and rendered medical aid before being transported by AMR to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where she later died.

Leonard said after a cause and origin investigation, OFD determined the fire appeared to have started on the mattress.

“The fire was quickly extinguished,” he said. “Basically a small fire, but a large amount of smoke.”
