With the recent rise in coronavirus cases in the area and the holiday season approaching, officials say it’s important to know how to get a COVID-19 test in Daviess County — and there are plenty of options.

“If you’re infected with COVID-19, you want to make sure you’re taking the steps to prevent it from spreading to other people, and the best way to do that is to know if you’re infected or not,” said Clay Horton, Green River District Health Department Director. “If you’ve been exposed to someone that you know has COVID-19 or if you’re developing symptoms, you want to find out quickly if that is COVID-19 or something else.”

Daviess County moved back into the Red Zone of Kentucky’s COVID-19 incidence rate on Nov. 5, and it has remained there due to a sharp increase in the number of daily cases. Red Zone counties are those with a rolling seven-day average of 25 or more daily cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents.

As of Saturday night, Daviess County’s incidence rate was 47.8.

“The trend is private get-togethers,” Horton said. “We see everything from wedding to funerals to shopping trips to golf outings, people getting together for dinner or riding in the car together to visit other friends. When we get this high rate of community spread, it becomes very difficult to control in places like long-term care facilities.”

Horton said most tests are either offered free or have no out-of-pocket costs due to insurance coverage. Though some providers offer rapid test results, the typical turnaround time is 24-48 hours.

The facilities listed below are listed on the state’s coronavirus website (kycovid19.ky.gov/) as providers offering COVID-19 tests to anyone in the community.

However, Horton said nearly every urgent care in Daviess County is offering tests, as are countless personal physicians. Anyone with a preferred health care provider can call to see what testing options are.

Owensboro Health is not listed on the state’s site, but anyone can call the OH COVID-19 Hotline (24 hours a day) at 877-888-6647 to talk to a triage nurse. If it is determined that you should be seen by a medical professional, the nurse will give you instructions on where to go and what to do.
