The City of Owensboro is in the final stages of processing nearly $240,000 in COVID-19 rental and business relief funds.

According to Director of Community Development Abby Shelton, the City will distribute about $167,000 for 93 rental agreements, along with $70,000 for 28 grants for small businesses.

“We have a few yet to process but are working with the landlords and business owners on necessary paperwork to get them payment,” Shelton said. “They have been extremely patient, and for that, we are very thankful.”

Shelton said the City has nine business grants and 15 rental grants left to process.

Months ago, these programs were submitted to Louisville’s Department of House and Urban Development. According to a statement Shelton made in early September, those Louisville office workers found that when they opened the programs from the City of Owensboro, the information they received didn’t match what was sent.

The computer malfunction prevented City officials from releasing funds and contracts because the plans had to be reviewed and approved by the Louisville HUD office, which administers the federal side of things for the City of Owensboro.
