One of downtown Owensboro’s historical buildings will soon have a new owner, as the former Apex Best Chemicals location will be up for auction in mid-December.
The auction will take place at the building, located at 112 W. Second St., at 1 p.m. Dec. 18
Located a block away from the Ohio River and Smothers Park, Tony Clark Realtors auctioneer Steve Marksberry described the three-story building as a prime piece of real estate in a growing downtown area.
“That is one of the better buildings in downtown Owensboro,” Marksberry said. “It has three stories and a basement. It also has a freight elevator, which is really nice. From the third floor, and even from [certain areas] of the second floor, you can see the river and the park.”
The building’s three main floors contain a total of 7,000 square feet while the basement offers an additional 2,500 square feet. It received a new roof this year and new front-facing windows not long ago, Marksberry said. Though it could be used for a variety of purposes, he said it would be a good fit for a restaurant, bar and/or condominiums.
Already, the property has garnered plenty of interest, Marksberry said.
The building is currently owned by Robert D. Prather.
While Prather would like to see the property sold at a good price, Marksberry said the building won’t be sold at an “absolute” price.
“There are a lot of things I think are going to happen downtown in the next year,” Marksberry said. “Whether it needs renovating will depend on what whoever buys it wants to do with it. But I see someone doing something fantastic with it.”
