Brandon S. Jackson, 38 of Owensboro, has been arrested for Tuesday night’s armed robbery and is facing multiple charges for a Wednesday morning incident at Owensboro High School, including possession of a weapon on school property and violation registered sex offender school restrictions.
Though Jackson was on school property, the building entrance is secured by double-locked doors. Jackson entered the primary door, but staff kept him from going through the secured entrance and into the building.
Jackson was charged with first-degree robbery for Tuesday’s incident. He was also charged with first-degree burglary, menacing, carrying a concealed weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, and registered sex offender school restrictions for the incident at OHS.
According to reports, officers responded at approximately 9:15 a.m. to OHS (1800 Frederica St.) after a male suspect — identified Jackson — followed an employee into the primary entrance of the locked building. When confronted and told he needed to leave, Jackson became aggressive with the staff member before finally exiting the building.
OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said: “Our district puts safety as a top priority and the incident this morning is a prime example of proper training and situational awareness protecting lives. There is a reason each of our buildings has a double-locked, secured entrance and it’s to prevent situations like this morning from becoming much worse. I want to commend our staff member who immediately noticed someone followed them into the primary door and followed all of the protocols to protect the safety of others.”
Revlett said upon realizing that someone had followed the staff member into the primary door, the staff member immediately told the suspect they needed to leave. The suspect did leave the building and law enforcement was immediately notified.
“Staff was notified of the incident and that the suspect had been arrested,” Revlett said. “They were commended for following all safety protocols and asked to remain vigilant at all times when entering and exiting the building. Thankfully, the district was on a ‘distance day’ for learning and there were only a small handful of students present in the building at the time.”
According to OPD, officers observed Jackson in the area after he left the building and he was ultimately determined to be the suspect from the armed robbery that occurred in Tuesday night.
According to reports, OPD responded to the 900 block of Frederica Street at approximately 11:35 p.m. Tuesday after an officer was flagged down by an individual who advised they had just been robbed.
The suspect, described as a white male, got into the female victim’s vehicle while the victim was stopped at the red light. The suspect presented a knife and demanded money, at which time the female fled on foot from the vehicle before seeing the officer and reporting the robbery.
Officers located the vehicle abandoned in the area but the suspect was not located until Wednesday’s incident.
