The Owensboro Family YMCA is temporarily closed and all 24-hour access will be denied until further notice due to a natural gas leak, officials announced Monday evening.
According to a statement from YMCA officials:
About 5pm tonight, the Y was evacuated due to natural gas smell. Facilities Director Josh James has reported that Atmos Energy arrived and determined that leaks appear to be in our boiler and perhaps in two of the 4 newer gas on-demand water heaters. Josh is attempting to contact Hagerman repair folks but may not connect with them until in the morning.
Despite the fact that the 1989 wellness center addition is not reliant on the boiler for heat, it does use gas in its separate units, and with all gas being shut off, none of the building can be heated. Hence, we will be shutting down 24-hour access, as well. We are in the process of notifying staff and posting social media notices and will keep you posted on status.
