Owensboro Public Schools was among nine other winners statewide for the Grow-Your-Own program grant. Each district will receive a one-time $50,000 grant. Jared Revlett, OPS Public Information Officer, said the funding will go toward building an education pathway for the students to utilize during their time at OHS.

The Grow-Your-Own program is part of the Kentucky Department of Education’s intention to recruit, develop and retain teachers who are already connected to the school or the community.

Pathway programs, Revlett said, are equivalent to a major program that helps students pursue what they are interested in.

“We want students that are interested in education, or maybe just test the waters through this grant and through this program,” Revlett said.

Revlett said the grant will also allow students to take dual enrollment courses in education with Kentucky Wesleyan College and Western Kentucky University.

Byron Darnall, the associate commissioner in KDE’s Office of Educator Licensure and Effectiveness, said the grants will help eliminate obstacles to enter the teaching profession that future educators may experience.

“Local schools and districts are uniquely suited to provide this opportunity to employees that may already be active in schools but lack full certification,” Darnall said. “GYO grants directly address potential barriers that may be preventing talented people from becoming fully certified educators.”
