Former Owensboro Thoroughbred and Midwest Division Second Team member Corey Wilford is helping young athletes improve their game with the 3v3 High Intensity Clinic.

The 3v3 clinic will be held from Oct. 4-Oct. 8, with fourth and fifth grade running from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., sixth through eighth grade running from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and ninth through 12th will run from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The maximum of 30 players will be split into teams and the games will be played to 12 at First Baptist Church, with Wilford and former Illinois State Redbird Tyler Brown right by their side.

“We’ll go fullcourt sideways,” Wilford said. “Not your traditional longways, there’s two side goals, so we’ll go fullcourt sideways and we’ll play to 12. Myself and Tyler Brown will be right there reffing and giving them pointers and tips as they play.”

Wilford said he wants the kids that come to the clinic to understand the little things are important too, not just scoring.

“Basketball and mistakes go hand-in-hand,” Wilford said. “You can’t play this game without making mistakes. So with kids, [I hope] they understand that they are going to make mistakes and learn how to play through mistakes and learn how to be a good teammate and just get an overall understanding of the game.”

Wilford has already been running 3v3 controlled games for weeks on Sundays and has seen the young athletes grow tenfold.

He was inspired by his own kids to start the clinic and the sessions and is thrilled to see them and their counterparts continually grow mentally and physically within the game..

“It’s satisfying as a trainer,” Wilford said. “I’ve been doing it for so long. A lot of these kids I’ve been working with for years, so to see them finally get it, I can’t explain the feeling. It’s just a great feeling.”

All in all, Wilford wants to use his experiences playing basketball at multiple levels to be able to give back to the kids and help them even surpass heights he reached by continuing to grow the clinic and sessions year after year.

“I just want to continue to grow it,” Wilford said. “I want to make this thing big. I’m going to just continue to do as much as I can and continue to try and develop these kids and make it happen.”
