Leslie McCarty has announced that she will run for re-election as Daviess County Clerk in the November 2022 election.
McCarty is in her first term as the County Clerk and said she’s gained a lot of knowledge since she was elected.
“I enjoy serving the people of Daviess County,” she said. “I have really grown to love this job and love what I do. It was definitely a challenge in the beginning coming from such a different background, but when you’re in this job you learn how important it really is. A lot of people may not understand what all we do, from being a tax collector to a facilitator of elections to being the keeper of all legal documents. It’s quite a job and I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and keep improving on what I’m doing.”
McCarty previously worked for 15 years at the Daviess County Public Library as the Kentucky Room manager.
Her initial term as County Clerk has featured having to deal with a recount after a race was decided by one vote, along with putting on an election during the pandemic. McCarty said facing those challenges helped her and the staff grow and learn quickly.
“It’s been baptism by fire,” she said. “I think what we’ve improved on is teamwork. The whole office has faced these challenges. In the pandemic, we’ve had to balance what’s best for our customers and what’s best for staff. With the recount, I had to have help from the whole office to do that. I’ve really learned what it takes to make the whole thing happen and still look at the bigger picture and learn more about what my management style is and just how to make the office function as a whole. It’s just been such a learning process.
McCarty said one of her goals as County Clerk was to make all records free via an online search. She said she’ll soon be able to cross that off her list, as that will begin on Dec. 1.
Her main goal, if re-elected, is to remodel the records room.
“I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot in my first term,” McCarty said. “I have appreciated the support of everybody in the county. I’m just very thankful for those who have helped me.”
