The United Way of the Ohio Valley has announced the inception of Big Break Owensboro on May 20 at Ben Hawes Golf Course. Big Break is a unique golf challenge that presents participants with eight different obstacles.

The event features challenges like hole-in-the-wall, closest to the pin, sandblast, towering flop wall, longest drive, speedy driver, long putt, and attempting to break glass.

“With so many golfers in our community, we wanted to bring something fun and different to those who enjoy the sport,” said Blaine Mathew, manager of digital communications and innovation for UWOV. “Many people may recognize some of the obstacles from their favorite Golf Channel show.”

The event will begin at noon. Players can receive awards for winning the individual challenges or scoring in the top three across all events. Mathew said even the lowest scorer overall would receive a trophy.

Tickets for the event are available under the special events tab of the UVOV website here, with all proceeds funding the United Way’s mission of delivering solutions that improve the lives of individuals and families.

“All proceeds go to help our community and allow us to serve our mission here at United Way of the Ohio Valley,” Mathew said. “Please consider adding a donation to your ticket purchase to support our cause further. Not only does this event get our communities members out and about doing something fun, but it also helps benefit those who are unable to leave their homes and those with no home at all.”

Mathew said that participants should bring their own clubs, but Ben Hawes has a small selection available for rent. He added that the event would be a fun and innovative way to “mix things up” within a friendly foursome.

“No longer will golfers have to wonder whether they can get their ball over the 12 foot flop wall; they can find out for certain on May 20,” he said. “This is an individual competition, but we encourage you to go head to head with your typical foursome to see who the best golfer really is.”
