Daviess County Fiscal Court on Monday approved a resolution changing the name of Old Hwy 144 to Nannie Belle Loop in honor of Nannie Belle Camp.

The push for the name change was started by Judge Gene Lanham, who said that the significance comes from Camp living near Old Hwy 144 (which is in eastern Daviess County near Knottsville).

Lanham said that Camp was known for having several pets including dogs and cats, as well as goats. He said Camp would share the goat milk with her neighbors, especially mothers of infants that weren’t accepting breast milk.

“She was just a good neighbor throughout the years and just a wonderful lady who cared for animals and would be, as far as I’m concerned, an icon for animal lovers,” Lanham said.

He said that the name change will also help pinpoint residences better for GPS users and delivery services.

The name change will go into effect in a couple of weeks.

In other business during the Fiscal Court meeting, commissioners heard the second reading of an ordinance regarding the Road and Street index. The index is updated annually, and this year’s included route number updates and the addition of one section of roadway.

Commissioners also heard the first reading for a budget amendment amendment allotting $1 million as a result of money not budgeted for the grant that OASIS received.

Jim Hendrix, County Treasurer, said that OASIS reported they will utilize each dollar within the fiscal year, so the amendment adds $1 million into revenue and $1 million into expenditures.

Commissioners also approved the annual resolution to reimburse Daviess County Public Schools for non-public school students’ transportation. The total of the expenses has gone done in previous years — likely because of the decline in students riding the bus according to Judge-Executive Al Mattingly.

Hendrix expects that the price may jump back up in the coming years due to fuel prices rising.

In respect of Good Friday, Fiscal Court will be closed for half the day on Friday, April 15.
