Owensboro Municipal Utilities will begin building out Segment 5 of their fiber internet service in early September. The project is contained from 4th Street to the north; Griffith Avenue to the South; J.R. Miller Boulevard to the East; and city limits to the west.

Director of Telecommunications Chris Poynter said they will start placing the infrastructure of the project in September through November and working on a neighborhood between Frederica Street and Parrish Court.

“We estimate a total number of 3,526 passings (potential customers) in Section 5 and anticipate a take-rate of 20% within the first few years of the services being offered, for a total anticipated number of fiber-to-the-home subscribers to be 705,” said Sonya Dixon, Communications and Public Relations Specialist.

OMU officials don’t want to roll it out too quickly because of the installation backlog, according to Poynter.

In a previous meeting, Poynter announced that the former plan of eight segments was reduced to seven, as they will combine their final two sections into their Fiscal Year 2024 plans.

The sixth segment will include Northwest in Fiscal Year 2023 and will service 2,550 households, while the final segment will include the Northeast area with 2,100 households.
