Owensboro Rampage hosting pre-season hockey tournament this weekend

The Owensboro Rampage hockey team, which is the three-time reigning state champions, is hosting the Owensboro Classic tournament this weekend at the Edge Ice Center. The visiting teams are the Bloomington Blades from Indiana, and the West Virginia Chiefs from Charleston, and the Brebeuf Braves from Indianapolis.

First-round games will be played Saturday. The consolation game will be at 11 a.m. Sunday followed by and the championship game at 2:30 p.m.

The regular season for the Rampage starts in October, and the 2022-23 team will feature a young roster, though there are some returning senior players. The team has also added defenceman Veeti Nykanen from Finland; Nykanen is an exchange student at Owensboro Innovation Academy.

The Owensboro Rampage capped off the 2021-22 season by winning the KHSHL state title for the third consecutive year.

“Three state championships in row creates a pressure to succeed again this year,” said head coach Jason Link. “The team has been working diligently on gaining strength and endurance, and the ice practice started at the beginning of August. We are confident that we are able to play fast and skillfull hockey throughout the season. The young men are a great team and this weekend we get to see where we are.”

Owensboro Rampage invites all sport lovers to come and see the home games at the Edge Ice Center during the season. There will be special events organized, such as the “Pink the Rink” event on Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. and a Military Appreciation event on Nov. 19 at 11 a.m.
