City approves grant applications totaling more than $84K for vests, ammo, tasers for OPD

City Commissioners on Tuesday approved grant applications for more than $84,000 for bulletproof vests, ammunition, and tasers for the Owensboro Police Department.

The grant applications will be filed with the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security for the Law Enforcement Protection Program. They do not require a match from the city.

OPD currently employs 98 full-time and five 5 part-time officers.

The grants and items are as follows:

  • $40,134.60 for the purchase of 100,500 rounds of ammunition for patrol rifles and patrol pistols. OPD annually purchases ammunition for patrol rifles and patrol pistols. The ammunition is used for training purposes, required range activity, and duty weapons.
  • $31,434 toward the purchase of 26 X26P tasers, 26 X26P taser battery packs, and 52 X26P taser cartridges. OPD currently uses a model of the X26 taser that is no longer manufactured or serviced, with many being used well over 7 years.
  • $13,237.56 for the purchase of 18 new Point Blank Body Armor vests. OPD has has 18 bulletproof vests assigned which will expire and require replacement during the next fiscal year.
