The Daniel Pitino Shelter will serve as the warming center for White Flag events this winter, starting November 1 and going through March 31. White Flag events are when the wind chill is likely to be at or below 15°F.
Daviess County Fiscal Court on Thursday signed the agreement to help pay for the cost of staffing and operating a warming center. The cost per White Flag event is $350, an amount that is split between the city and the county. It’s currently estimated to cost the county $13,000 for the season, with the money primarily paying for security.
Judge-Executive Al Mattingly said that the location at the Pitino Shelter will be great for those seeking a warm place considering its central location to the city and accessibility on bus routes.
The City has already signed an agreement to pay for the other half of the cost.
