Gregory A. Embry, the man who was shot by a Daviess County Sheriff’s Deputy on September 23, has been charged by Kentucky State Police with attempted murder of a police officer. Embry was arrested Thursday following his release from the hospital. Embry also faces other charges from DCSO, which alleges that he used a hammer to damage vehicles and residences and also strangled a woman who was eventually able to flee.

KSP announced their charges, which also include second-degree assault and first-degree burglary, on Thursday afternoon. Their investigation is ongoing.

Earlier Thursday, DCSO announced their charges and provide more details of the incident leading up to the shooting.

Embry, 39, was arrested Thursday in the 9300 block of US 60 West (the vicinity where the alleged incidents took place) and faces charges from DCSO of first-degree burglary, first-degree strangulation, and first-degree criminal mischief.

According to the arrest warrant, Embry went to a neighbor’s residence and used a hammer to bash the windshields of two separate vehicles, also causing other damage to those vehicles.

A release from DCSO says there was also video footage of Embry then walking to another residence, breaking a window, and unlawfully entering through the broken window. Once inside he busted the television with a hammer in the living room, according to DCSO.

Embry then “caught the female resident who was at home at the time in a doorway and began to strangle her,” and the victim advised police “that she felt as if she was going to go unconscious due to the strangulation,” according to the DCSO release.

Per DCSO, the woman told police that her 17-year-old daughter came into the room as the woman was being strangled and jumped on Embry, that he let the woman go, and that she and her daughter were able to flee from the residence.

Embry then fled to another residence and broke into the home, according to DCSO. That’s where the deputy-involved shooting took place.

The deputy was not injured. Per general policy, the shooting is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police.

Preliminary investigation from KSP revealed that DCSO deputy Alex Coomes was in the area when he observed a frantic woman and a juvenile running from a house. The woman told Coomes they escaped after being assaulted by a man with a hammer inside their home. According to KSP, Coomes went inside where he confronted Embry, who was armed with a hammer.

Per a KSP release, Embry attempted to attack Coomes with the hammer when the deputy discharged his service weapon, striking Embry.
