Local students are helping provide for those in need in the community. Owensboro Catholic High School recently donated more than 3,000 items to the Help Office of Owensboro in their latest drive. And 7th-grade students at Owensboro Innovation Middle School collected more than 500 items that were donated to families by the Owensboro International Center.

The Help Office of Owensboro has been providing Food Assistance to the poor and homeless in Daviess County for over 50 years.

“This year has been a difficult time for those we serve because many are having to make a choice to pay their rent or utility bills or provide food for their family’s table,” said Executive Director Angela Settle. “Therefore, we have had a drastic increase in requests for food and have struggled to meet the demand. Our food pantry shelves have been bare.”

The donations from Owensboro Innovation Middle School were assembled in bags to give to refugees. While some items collected were hygiene products and other necessities, students also donated “fun” items such as soccer balls, board games, dolls, toy cars, and more.
