Owensboro Municipal Utilities officials are looking at the future of Electric Vehicles (EV) locally, including potentially creating charging stations in the city.
During a Thursday board meeting, OMU commissioners talked about doing a study to see the benefits of offering charging stations in the community.
A consulting company would evaluate the cost associated with running a charging station(s), which would primarily be available for residential rather than commercial usage.
Sonya Dixon, OMU Communications and Public Relations Manager, said the EV market is proving to have a growing interest in Owensboro and it could be something that would be good for OMU to look into providing for their customers.
Dixon said there are two ways that charging stations could start appearing in the community. One option is privately sourced energy stations offered by OMU.
Dixon used the current station at the Hampton Inn and Suites downtown as an example of one that operates “off the meter” — or privately sourced for their customers.
There would be a possibility for organizations to sign up to have charging stations through OMU nonetheless.
Officials said they also have a mock policy prepared to help guide them as they move forward.
