There will be 12 local voting centers utilized on Election Day, November 8, and any qualified voter in Daviess County is eligible to vote at any of the locations — and the Sportscenter will not be among them. There will also only be one location from Nov. 3-5 for early voting this year.
While the Sportscenter has served as a popular and efficient polling site in recent elections, Daviess County Clerk Leslie McCarty said the location was simply already booked and there were no ill intentions by not including it.
“If (the Sportcenter’s) management group is wanting them to have events all the time and to be that sports place or have concerts and graduations, etc., it’s not going to have a whole lot of availability to us,” McCarty said.
When her office first announced the 12 polling sites, there was some negative reaction from the community. McCarty said she’s even been asked about the integrity of the election.
McCarty wants to assure everyone that every aspect of the local election will be conducted as is should be and with transparency.
She added that there will be free bus rides to polling places on Election Day, allowing easy access to locations including Third Baptist Church, which essentially is serving as the replacement for the Sportscenter.
The transition to voting centers from precincts has been a beneficial transition in McCarty’s eyes. They had grown to as many as 56 precinct locations, which would spread the poll workers thin. Plus, with voting centers anybody can cast their vote at any location.
Early voting will run November 3-5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and will be conducted only at Owensboro Christian Church (2818 New Hartford Road).
