Jay Wethington will return to his seat as the 6th Judicial Circuit, Division 1 judge seat beating opponent Leigh Jackson in Tuesday’s General Election. Wethington had retired from the position in August but later decided to seek the seat again.
Wethington received 14,550 votes (59%) compared to Jackson’s 10,080 votes. He said he’s extremely grateful to have received the support as he heads back into his former seat.
“I’m excited that I plan on continuing to do the hard work that I’ve done and take care of the public,” he said.
Wethington said the votes showcase the effective work that he has accomplished as Circuit Judge. He said it also means the public trusts him and the integrity he established within the community through his courtroom and other initiatives.
He plans to continue those initiatives once back in office the position — such as including remote hearings, which have contributed to saving taxpayer money and the efficiency of the courtroom.
In the meantime, he is preparing his schedule to help teach incoming judges in December.
Wethington was originally elected to his position as 6th Judicial Circuit Division I judge in 2007, and he was re-elected without opposition in 2014.
He served as the chief prosecutor for the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office from 1995 until he joined the court in 2007.
Wethington received his undergraduate degree from Western Kentucky University and his J.D. degree from Northern Kentucky University.
