Lisa Burns-Kirby has been organizing the annual Community Christmas Party for over a decade. Burns-Kirby created the concept – which offers a free meal and winter items to those in need – in 2010 when her 10-year-old daughter Kaitelynn approached her about helping the homeless. This year’s party is slated for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the VFW on the riverfront.

“This is our 12th time hosting this party,” Burns-Kirby said. “We gather coats, blankets, gloves, and whatever else we can to help people stay warm during the winter. Santa also brings a big bag of new toys for families to take home.”

Anyone is welcome to attend the event, which features chili, hotdogs, drinks, and baked goods for a meal. Anyone with new or gently used winter clothing items or food to donate should reach out to Burns-Kirby at [email protected].

“I created the program because I wanted Kaitelynn and her friend group to have an opportunity to give back to the community,” she said. “She’s 22 now and is a huge part of this every year. I also have several kids who helped in the past return to volunteer each year. It’s humbling.”

The Community Christmas Party holds true to its name as several community members attend and volunteer. Burns-Kirby said local law enforcement has always played a pivotal role in the efforts, primarily orchestrating Santa’s appearance.

“Several people come together to help,” she said. “My brother has always helped with Santa, and now his nephew is. Keri and Bill Brookings always find time to help collect items.”

Burns-Kirby likes to keep the event downtown because she said those in need typically migrate toward the river. After a one-year stint at St. Benedict’s because of COVID-19 restrictions, she’s excited to return the event to the VFW.

“The VFW has welcomed us every year,” Burns-Kirby said. “They invite veterans in need to join for dinner and assist them in finding a coat. Bags of Love is also a huge help in providing presents.”
