DCSO: Man facing several charges after burglary and assault on deputies

A 31-year-old man is facing several charges after he assaulted deputies following an attempted home burglary Sunday morning, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

DCSO officials said they were dispatched to a burglary in progress at approximately 4:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Thomas Drive, near Wrights Landing Road in northeast Daviess County.

Upon arrival deputies heard the subject, later identified as Jose Velazquez-Ocampo, inside the home, according to the release. 

“Deputies issued verbal commands for the subject to exit the home and surrender, at which time the subject busted out the back window and attempted to escape,” per the release. “Deputies gave chase where they caught up to him at the intersection of Oak Drive and Thoma Drive. A struggle ensued where the subject was able to disarm one of the deputies of their firearm.” 


According to DCSO, deputies were able to get the firearm away from the subject and restrained him. The report says that once in handcuffs, the subject continued to resist by kicking deputies before he was eventually placed in the back of a cruiser. 

One deputy suffered a fracture in his hand while another sustained suspected minor injuries during the apprehension of the subject. 

Velazquez-Ocampo was booked into the Daviess County Detention Center on the following charges: 

1. Burglary, 2nd degree

2. Disarming a Peace Officer 

3. Assault, 3rd degree – Police Officer (2 counts) 

4. Fleeing or Evading Police, 1st degree (On Foot) 

5. Resisting Arrest 

6. Criminal Mischief, 1st degree

7. Wanton Endangerment,1st degree – Police Officer (3 counts)
