A fire caused significant damage to El Tucan del Cielo Mexican Restaurant on Tamarack Road Thursday morning, with the restaurant “likely a total loss” according to the Owensboro Fire Department. A family member of the owner said it’s too soon to know specific future plans, but the family hopes to re-open the restaurant even if it’s in another location.
No one was inside when the fire started so there were no injuries.
El Tucan will be setting up a GoFundMe page, and the link will be shared on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
OFD Battalion Chief Richard Peach said the first started in the kitchen at approximately 8:50 a.m., and crews had the fire knocked down within 30 minutes. The did overhaul for nearly 2 hours after that.
However, he said the fire spread into the dining room, and the entire business sustained heavy smoke and water damage.
The other businesses in the strip center all received “a little bit of water and quite a bit of smoke damage” according to Peach, who said he thinks “everything’s gonna be shut down for some time.” The power and water are shut off for the entire strip center.
