The Kentucky state legislature on Friday donated $1 million to the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club, with the money earmarked for helping five of the organization’s locations with needed capital projects.

“After reviewing the state of youth in Kentucky post COVID-19, lobbyists recognized the importance for youth organizations was needed now more than ever,” said Kalie Winkler, Director of RD & Marketing for club. “Their diligent efforts along with Boys & Girls Club staff across the state and community leaders, caused the KY state legislature to take notice. The results turned into $10 million dollars being allocated to Boys & Girls Clubs across the state of Kentucky.”

CEO Steve Winkler said the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club (CHBGC) has been working to ensure the vision of the organization is being felt by all the youth in the communities they serve. He said the $1 million will go a long way in supporting that cause.

“It would normally take us about 50 to 60 grants to be able to make that impact for our kids,” he said.

One of the major projects CHBGC is working on includes the teen center renovations, which is expected to cost around $100,000. The investments include 3D printers, gaming stations, a music studio, and more. CHBGC aims to put a teen center in each of the locations they have.

Other projects include a workforce development center, a generator for the Henderson County club, LED lighting, transportation, and more.

“This allocation will help each club reach more youth within their respective communities, thus helping us create more great futures for tomorrow’s leaders, innovators and decision makers,” Kalie Winkler said.

Several state representatives and state senators attended the check presentation, including Rep. Suzanne Miles.

“As legislators, we have the opportunity to make choices,” she said. “Our choice on this specific investment in our community is a good investment in our children. It’s a good investment for the children that don’t normally have access to things and Steve and his team have done a phenomenal job and I think we need to reward good behavior.”
