Lure Seafood and Grille Owner Ben Skiadas and other local business owners have formed the Owensboro Food and Beverage Coalition to help create bonds and discussion across the industry. They’re hosting their first of monthly food competitions next week.

“Number one we’re trying to do things within our industry to work better together and collaborate and to be a sounding board for anyone in the community looking for answers with restaurants, even if it’s someone that’s maybe trying to start an organizing event,” Skiadas said.

They also aspire to help event organizers connect with businesses and restaurants, including by hosting their own events.

First up is the Owensboro Mac & Cheese Throwdown, which starts Sunday.

Approximately 20 businesses are participating with their own mac and cheese concoction. There will be two different leagues based on the cost of the dish: one for meals above $13, and one below.

There will be judges for each league, and the community will vote for their overall favorite.

“We hope that we’re all winners in that the community gets the fun of it to participate, and all the restaurants hopefully get a boost in business,” Skiadas said.

The coalition plans to continue with similar competitions throughout the year, with themed weeks including milkshakes, tacos, soup and more.

“Different things that are healthy and friendly activities that the restaurants and bars can all participate in and have a little healthy competition, but also, it’s a great way to get us all out and get to know each other a little better,” Skiadas said.
