Owensboro Municipal Utilities is proposing rate increases that would result in customer’s electric bills going up by .7% and .9% for Fiscal Years 2024 and 2025, respectively, to help combat inflation and cost increases.

Director of Finance and Accounting Lynn Holland said it’s “a very minimal increase.”

With the proposal, a Single Phase Residential customer that paid $15.00 in June 2022 would see the monthly bill increase to $16.50 in June 2023 and to $18.00 in June 2024.

The City Utility Commission approved the motion Friday, so the proposal will now be presented to the Owensboro City Commission for approval at an upcoming meeting.

In other business, OMU approved a swap of territory boundaries between OMU and Kenergy. In the agreement, Big Rivers Electric Corporation wanted to operate a facility within OMU’s service boundary that will be serviced by Kenergy.

OMU agreed to permit Kenergy to service the area in exchange for two of Kenergy’s existing boundaries.

“This is a good deal for us,” Commissioner Paul Martin said. “Actually, it’s a good deal for both of us. I think it’s a win-win and we don’t get a whole lot of those.”
