A traffic stop ended with a 16-year-old being found in possession of a loaded handgun and “numerous items” of drug paraphernalia while driving to Apollo High School on Monday morning, according to the Owensboro Police Department.

After pulling the juvenile over just before 8 a.m. Monday, the officers on scene developed probable cause that illegal substances were in the vehicle which led to the search, OPD officials said.

The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to Warren County Regional Juvenile Detention Center and charged with the following:

  • Possession of Handgun by Minor 1st Offense (Enhancement)
  • Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possess (Enhancement)
  • Speeding 18 MPH Over the Limit (School Zone)

OPD reported that the juvenile had also previously been charged with Assault 4th Degree (Minor injury) and Wanton Endangerment 2nd Degree.

OPD notified Daviess County Public Schools after taking the juvenile into custody.
