A man nearly drove over a trooper while fleeing a traffic stop, wrecked near KY 54, and stole a vehicle at Meijer to continue fleeing, according to the Kentucky State Police. KSP found the stolen vehicle abandoned at a residence, but are still searching for the man. They said there does not appear to be any danger to the public.

According to KSP Trooper Corey King, the incident began when a trooper conducted a traffic stop at a truck stop on US 60 East. King said the trooper suspected intoxicants, and a sobriety test was performed on the female driver.

According to King, at some point during the stop the male passenger got in the driver’s seat and began to drive away. King said the trooper approached the driver’s window to try to stop him, but the driver “tried to run the trooper over” as he drove away. The trooper couldn’t give chase because he was in the process of arresting the female.

King said the male drove westbound on US 60, and said KSP received reports of the man driving erratically and using the emergency strip to pass vehicles.

King said the man ran into Meijer and stole a red hoodie before stealing a vehicle in the parking lot. They were able to locate a vehicle at a residence but the man was not there.

King said they believe they know the man’s identity and are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant as they search for him. King said there will be several charges for the man, including felony level offenses. King said the woman is also expected to face multiple charges.

Owensboro Police Department is working the accident portion of the incident and had no further information to add. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
