Owensboro man sentenced to nearly 13 years in federal prison for firearm and drug offenses

A 38-year-old Owensboro man was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison this week. The sentence included 10 years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and drug trafficking and 33 months for violation of his federal supervised release. 

According to court documents, on October 2, 2021, Steven Boehman possessed with the intent to distribute 63.771 grams of methamphetamine. Boehman, a convicted felon, also possessed a Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He was prohibited from possessing a firearm because he had previously been convicted of felony offenses — including receiving stolen property in 2015 and being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2017.

OPD issued a release with more details about the incident that occurred on October 2, 2021. Officials said that at approximately 3:37 p.m. OPD initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. During the course of the investigation, an OPD K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle and a subsequent search ensued, officials said. 

Officers recovered a loaded handgun, approximately 75 grams of suspected methamphetamine, and multiple items of drug paraphernalia. 

At the time of traffic stop, Boehman was arrested and charged with:

• Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense – (Greater than or equal to 2 Grams Methamphetamine) (Firearm Enhancement) 

• Trafficking in Marijuana (Less than 8oz) 1st Offense (Firearm 

Enhancement) 

• Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon 

• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 

• Improper Turning 

• Failure to or Improper Signal 

• Failure to Produce Insurance Card 

• Failure to Notify Address Change to Department of Transportation 

Officials said that at the time, Boehman was on supervised release for his 2017 federal firearm conviction. He received an additional 33-month sentence for violating his supervised release. 

Following the nearly 13-year prison sentence, Boehman will serve 5 years on supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system. 

The case was investigated by the ATF Owensboro Field Office and the Owensboro Police Department. 

U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky, Acting Special Agent in Charge Robert Maynard of the ATF Louisville Field Division, and OPD Chief Art Ealum made the announcement about Boehman’s sentence this week. 

According to OPD, Boehman has previously been charged with the following: 

• Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon 

• Trafficking in Marijuana (Less than 8oz) 1st Offense 

• Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm) 

• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 

• Parole Violation for Felony Offense 

• Bail Jumping 1st Degree 

• Tampering with Physical Evidence 

• Theft from Building Under $500 

• Violation of Kentucky EPO/DVO (2 Counts) 

• Theft of Parts/Contents from Vehicle $500 (10 Counts) 

• Theft of Firearm (2 Counts) 

• Receiving Stolen Property Under $500 (3 Counts) 

• Unlawful Possession of Meth Precursor 

• Forgery 2nd Degree 

• Theft by Unlawful Taking – Shoplifting 

• Giving a Police Officer a False Name
