County Commissioner boundary lines

Daviess County Fiscal Court will create a committee to reapportion the boundary lines for the three county districts for commissioners, justices of the peace, and constables. Three citizens will be appointed to the committee, one by each commissioner, at the next Fiscal Court meeting at 5 p.m. on May 18.

By state and federal law, a committee is formed after every census for to reapportion county districts. Though the latest census was in 2020, reapportionment has been delayed due to COVID-19.

According to a public notice from Fiscal Court, the reapportionment is done to make sure boundary lines for districts “are compact, contiguous and the population of each district shall be as nearly equal as is reasonably possible.”

Appointed commissioners will meet at 5 p.m. on June 8 in the Fiscal Courtroom. A written report of such boundary lines shall be filed with the Daviess Fiscal Court and the Office of the County Clerk within 60 days of appointment of commissioners. Within 60 days of the receipt of the report, the Fiscal Court shall adopt or amend the report in establishing the districts.

According to the notice, after Fiscal Court has adopted the report, any registered voter of Daviess County has 20 days to bring an action in the Circuit Court to enforce the provision of KRS 67.045. The Circuit Court shall hear the action, and if it finds that the provisions of KRS 67.045 have been violated, the matter will be remanded to Fiscal Court.
