List: Owensboro community honoring fallen heroes through several Memorial Day events

With Memorial Day weekend approaching, the community is commemorating the invaluable contributions and sacrifices of the nation’s servicemen and servicewomen with several events in the coming days. Here are some ways to the public can celebrate and honor local fallen heroes.

Thursday, May 25

  • 5:30 p.m. – The Sons of the American Revolution will honor the fallen at Moseley Square Cemetery, situated at 722 East 5th Street.

Friday, May 26

  • 8 a.m. – The VFW #696 will place flowers on gravesites.
  • 11 a.m. – Heritage Place Senior Living will host a Memorial Day flagpole Unveiling and Veteran Dedication. The ceremony will honor eight Veterans that call Heritage Place Home.
  • 4 p.m. – The VFW #696 will host a Field of Poppies Ceremony at their location. A violinist and color guard will be on site for the ceremony.

Saturday, May 27

  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Owensboro Memorial Gardens will host A Call to Honor: Tomb of the Unknown Replica at Heritage Chapel. The exhibit boasts a 50%-detailed replica of the Tomb of Arlington National Cemetery containing the remains of unknown soldiers from World War I. The traveling exhibit also features three replica crypts holding unidentified remains from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Greenwood Cemetery will host services for the more than 200 veterans laid to rest on site. 
  • 2 p.m. – Owensboro Memorial Gardens will host speakers Jesse Mountjoy and Flem Gordon with music from Andy Brasher and Cathy Mullins for the 25th Annual Day of Remembrance. Sponsored by the VFW 696, the event also features an honor guard, a salute to fallen heroes, a community band, singers, and a dove release.

Sunday, May 28

  • 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. – The Owensboro Memorial Gardens will host A Call to Honor: Tomb of the Unknown Replica at Heritage Chapel.   • 1 p.m. – American Legion Post 9 – in conjunction with James L. Yates – will host a memorial service at Elmwood Cemetery. 
  • 5 p.m. – Utica Baptist Church will host its annual Memorial Day Flag Presentation Service. 

Monday, May 29

  • 8 a.m. – The Owensboro Memorial Day Run to Remember will pay tribute to the thousands of Americans who have paid the ultimate price for freedom. 
  • 8 a.m. – Veterans Empowered Together (VET) will host a Ruck March beginning at the Gold Star Memorial
  • 11 a.m. – An event at the Owensboro SportsCenter veterans’ monument will honor fallen soldiers.
  • 1 p.m. – The VFW 696 will host sea services on the riverfront.
