OPD: Armed subject arrested after attempting to steal vehicles while fleeing police near Burlew and Old Hartford

Update, May 12 – Adam Carter was federally indicted Wednesday for carjacking and possession of a firearm in relation to an incident on April 13 where police allege he attempted to steal two occupied vehicles while he tried to flee law enforcement.

The United States District Court Western District of Kentucky indicted Carter on the following charges:

  • Carjacking (2 Counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence (2 Counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person

Original story — A 39-year-old Owensboro man who was armed attempted to steal two occupied vehicles as he tried to flee police Thursday morning on Burlew Boulevard, according to the Owensboro Police Department. The man has dozens of previous charges, many of which are drug-related.

According to a release, at approximately 7:53 a.m. OPD responded to a warrant service in the 1300 block of Burlew Boulevard, where the male subject — identified as Adam Carter — led officers on a foot pursuit. During the pursuit, officers observed Carter to be in possession of a firearm, officials said. 

OPD said that while fleeing from officers in the 3400 block of Old Hartford Road, Carter was armed and unsuccessfully attempted to steal two different occupied vehicles. The release says that Carter continued on foot back to the 1300 block of Burlew Boulevard, where officers apprehended him without further incident. 

Carter was arrested and charged with: 

  • Robbery 1st Degree (2 Counts) 
  • Possession of Handgun by Convicted Felon 
  • Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree (On Foot) 
  • Disorderly Conduct 2nd Degree 
  • Criminal Trespassing 3rd Degree 
  • Possession of Marijuana 

In reference to an ongoing unrelated investigation. Detectives executed a search warrant and charged Carter with the following: 

  • Trafficking in Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Greater than or equal to 2 Grams Methamphetamine) 
  • Possession of Controlled Substance, 1st Degree, 2nd Offense 
  • (Methamphetamine) (Enhancement) 
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 

Officers served warrants on Carter for the following charges: 

  • Receiving Stolen Property $1,000 – $10,000 (Enhancement) 
  • Parole Violation Warrant (Enhancement) 
  • Failure to Appear (Enhancement) 

Carter has previously been charged with the following: 

  • Trafficking Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Methamphetamine) 
  • Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon 
  • Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm) 
  • Receiving Stolen Property Under $500 
  • Possession Controlled Substance 1st Degree. 1st Offense (Methamphetamine) 
  • Trafficking in Marijuana (8oz to less than 5 lbs.) – 1st Offense (3 Counts) Possession of Marijuana (3 Counts) 
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (6 Counts) 
  • Possession of Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, 1st Offense (Drug Unspecified) 
  • Possession of Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, 1st Offense (Xanax) 
  • Possession of Synthetic Drugs – 1st Offense 
  • Tampering with Physical Evidence 
  • Bail Jumping 1st Degree 
  • Probation Violation (For Felony Offense) (2 Counts) 
  • Burglary 2nd Degree 
  • Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree 
  • Theft by Deception-Include Cold Checks Under $500 (8 Counts) 
  • Fleeing or Evading Police, 2nd Degree (Motor Vehicle) 
  • Fleeing or Evading Police, 2nd Degree (On Foot) 
  • Resisting Arrest 
  • Giving Officer false Identifying Information
