Owensboro Karen Restaurant is closing its doors on August 13 after three years of operation, owners share on Friday afternoon.

The business was started by Hser Wah and her sister Tee Moo who both dreamed of owning their own restaurant that would serve Karen food as both are refugees from Myanmar.

Wah said she was thankful for the years of support from the community as she and her sister were able to operate the business at 7046 Hwy 56.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone in the community for coming and supporting us past three years,” Wah said.

The term Karen comes from the ethnic group of Myanmar — formerly known as Burma until 1989. Owensboro Karen served authentic Burmese & Thai cuisine, Curries and Buko (coconut custard pie).

When they first opened, Wah said she wanted to introduce Owensboro to Karen food while the population increased.

“The reason why we opened the restaurant is that we want people to try our food,” Wah said in 2020. “We’re going to cook Asian food, such as Burmese food and Thai food, because we come from two different countries.”
