Update: Suspect detained following hostage situation on 4th Street

The Owensboro Police Department (OPD) responded to a man with a weapon at the 300 block of Crittenden Street. OPD responded to a call at 1:14 p.m. regarding the man allegedly inside a residence with a machete and gun.

OPD said the male subject had threatened two individuals and refused to let them leave the residence. Once officers arrived on the scene, they secured the perimeter and contacted the individuals who could exit the home safely and without injury.

The OPD Criminal Investigations Division and the Emergency Response Team responded to the scene. The team members began calling the male subject from the residence and exited peacefully.

Detectives then obtained and executed a search warrant for the residence and discovered a large machete and firearm replica.

OPD identified the subject as John Williams (58 years old of Owensboro. They arrested him on charges of wanton endangerment 1st degree (2 counts), unlawful imprisonment 2nd degree (2 counts), and probation violation for felony offense (6 counts). Detectives transported Williams to the Daviess County Detention Center.

Williams has previously been charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree 1st Offense
    (Methamphetamine) (4 Counts)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree 1st Offense (Drug
    Unspecified)
  • Receiving Stolen Property $1,000 Less than $10,000
  • Alcohol Intoxication in a Public Place (1st & 2nd Offense) (3 Counts)
  • Criminal Trespass 1st Degree (2 Counts)
  • Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree
  • Theft of Services
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (2 Counts)
