Derek Anderson, former NBA player and member of the University of Kentucky men’s basketball championship-winning team of 1996, will be the featured speaker at the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club’s 40th Annual Steak & Burger Dinner on Monday. Tyler Ulis was originally scheduled to speak but the Club said the change was made due to unforeseen circumstances out of their control.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Mike Horn Unit location (3415 Buckland Square). The event is sponsored by Independence Bank and the dinner is dedicated in honor of the late Jack T. Wells. The Club said in a release that Wells “was a beloved supporter of our organization and believed in helping us change the lives of the youth in Owensboro.”

Funds raised will be used to provide Academic Success and Healthy Lifestyle programs and activities for the Club’s Owensboro location. Ticket prices are $100 per individual, $400 for one table with four guests, or $750 for two tables with eight guests. To RSVP, contact Kalie Winkler at 270-685-4903 or [email protected]

“Our guests love the experience and how it ties everyone from our Club youth, community leaders, and sports role models together,” said Winkler, Director of RD & Marketing. “We are so sincerely grateful for Mr. Anderson and his support and willingness to help us continue this tradition for our Club members.”

Anderson helped the Wildcats win a college basketball national championship in 1996 under coach Rick Pitino. Nine players, including Anderson, went on to play in the NBA Players. In 2006, Anderson was on the Miami Heat team that defeated the Dallas Mavericks to win an NBA Championship. His NBA career spanned 11 years but was plagued by injuries.

In his professional career off the court, Anderson started a foundation, wrote a book, and is a motivational speaker. He enjoys giving back to the community and working with youth.
