Update: Oct. 2, 12:43 p.m. – Troy Gunter, 54, of Owensboro, was arrested for a fraudulent firearm transaction in relation to a previous arrest from last week, according to the Owensboro Police Department.
OPD reported that detectives continued their investigation, which resulted in Grant Givens, 32, of Owensboro, being arrested. They determined that a family member identified that Gunter purchased the firearm from the gun show after passing a background check.
While conducting negotiations on September 25, Gunter told officers he was unaware of Givens possessing any firearms. The investigation revealed that Gunter purchased the firearm for Givens, OPD reported.
According to OPD, it was also determined that Gunter was aware that Givens had been denied access to purchase the firearm due to his background check. Detectives consulted with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, and an arrest warrant was obtained for Gunter.
OPD reported Gunter was arrested on his warrant and transported to the Daviess County Detention Center on the following charges:

Original story – Sept. 27: Grant Givens, 32, of Owensboro, has been arrested after barricading himself inside a residence Wednesday morning, according to the Owensboro Police Department.
According to OPD, officers were investigating Givens starting September 25 after a fraudulent firearm transaction occurred. OPD reported the subject was denied the firearm purchase when he failed to meet the background qualifications and criteria to legally purchase a firearm, which prompted the investigation.
According to OPD, at 9:46 a.m. officers initiated a warrant service on the 4100 block of Ryeland Point and made contact with Givens but Givens barricaded himself inside the residence before being arrested.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division, Emergency Response Team, and Hostage Negotiation Unit responded to the scene. OPD reported that during the negotiations, Givens claimed he would not be taken alive and presented a firearm.
According to a release, the Emergency Response Team began the implementation of armed barricaded subject procedures and executed the search warrant. Hostage negotiators and the ERT were able to make contact with the subject and coordinate a peaceful surrender, per OPD. The scene was secured, and a search of the residence resulted in the recovery of a firearm, according to OPD.
Givens was lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center and charged with the following:
- Fraudulent Firearm Transaction
- Violation of Kentucky EPO/DVO (2 counts)
Givens has previously been charged with the following:
- Stalking 1st Degree
