Two people died in the accident that occurred on the Wendell Ford Expressway (the bypass) Wednesday morning, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a release, at 7:23 a.m. Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received a call of a vehicle collision in the 2100 block of the Expressway, located between Pleasant Valley Road and KY 144.

“Initial investigation indicates that a westbound passenger car crossed the median for unknown reasons and struck a pickup truck traveling east causing a head-on collision with severe damage to both vehicles,” according to DCSO.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased on scene by the Daviess County Coroner’s Office. The identities will be released at a later time.

There were no other passengers in either vehicle nor any other vehicles involved, according to DCSO.

The roadway was closed to eastbound traffic for approximately 2 hours. Westbound traffic was reduced to one operational lane. All lanes have since reopened.

The DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the collision. Also responding were the DCSO Drone Unit, Daviess County Fire Department, Thruston-Philpot Fire Department, AMR Ambulance, Daviess County Emergency Management Agency, and the Kentucky Department of Highways.
