Mike Van Meter has filed to run for the position of Commonwealth’s Attorney in the 2024 election. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Bruce Kuegel currently holds the seat but will retire at the end of the year. It is expected that the governor will appoint someone to fill the position for the remainder of the term, until the November election.

According to Van Meter, he has “the full support and endorsement of Bruce Kuegel to fill his position.”

A Daviess County native, Van Meter went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in police administration from Eastern Kentucky University before obtaining his Juris Doctorate at the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law.

Van Meter returned to Daviess County as a prosecutor, serving as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for 29 years, including as the First Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney since 2015. He said that he has prosecuted every type of felony criminal case, with a specialization in sexual assault cases.

“My experience as a prosecutor and knowledge of the criminal code are unmatched in Daviess County. I have tried more felony cases by jury trial and have made more court appearances in Daviess Circuit Court than any other prosecutor or attorney in the history of Daviess County,” Van Meter said.

In 2019, he was awarded an award an accommodation from the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, Inc., which is a statewide coalition of the 13 rape crisis centers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Locally, he has also received the “Voice for Change” award from New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services.

Said Van Meter: “I look forward to continuing the duties and responsibilities of the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office as well as the privilege of seeking justice for the citizens of Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky.”
