Anyone needing motor vehicle services such as renewals and license plate issuance can expect hours-long wait times and difficulty with some transactions. The Daviess County Clerk’s Office announced Monday afternoon that the rollout of the state’s new vehicle information database has come with “lots of bugs and some significant issues.”

It was announced in December that County Clerk offices statewide would temporarily pause motor and vessel-related services in early January to accommodate the transition to the new database. State officials said a the time there may be longer wait times when services resumed.

The Daviess County Clerk’s Office Auto Department re-opened on January 11, saying to expect slow processing times and long lines.

On Monday, the Clerk’s Office posted an update on Facebook, saying:

“The rollout of the new KAVIS auto system came with lots of ‘bugs’ and some significant issues. The KAVIS team in Frankfort is working around the clock to address these issues,” the message said.

It continued: “With the issues at hand our office is experiencing extremely long processing times for simple transactions for every customer. Some transactions fail at the time of checkout, and we are unable to finish it at all. This is equally frustrating for staff and the customer. We want nothing more than to get your business taken care of.”

The post said customers should have the following expectations this week:

  • Long lines – some wait times can be 2 to 2 ½ hours.
  • We may have to close the line in the afternoon to be able to process those customers who have been in line waiting and be able to close out that day’s business. Times will vary and be based on how long the line is but could be as early as 2:30-3.
  • With the high volume of customers, we will be unable to process any phone renewals or look up what you owe over the phone until we return to normal business traffic. This could be weeks.

The Clerk’s Office also issued the following suggestions for January and February renewals:

  • Please consider renewing online at drive.ky.gov. You will need your title number, plate number, and a debit/credit card. If you get a message that your registration is not found or cannot be renewed online, you will have to come into the office to complete.
  • You can also mail your renewal to the Daviess County Clerk’s Office at P.O. Box 609 Owensboro, K, 42302. Please include your renewal notice or old registration, your insurance card, check, and phone number in case we have an issue that requires us to talk with you.

“We continue to ask for your patience and understanding,” the post reads. “The issues are out of our control.”
