Daviess County’s Dr. Angela Gunter is 1 of 2 Kentuckians to be presented with the 2024 Champion Award by the Kentucky National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) Network. The award recognizes those who dedicated to supporting public education and furthering accomplished teaching in the Commonwealth.

Gunter is the District Literacy Instructional Coach and Gifted & Talented Coordinator for Daviess County Public Schools. The other 2024 Champion Award was presented to Suzanne Farmer, Chief Academic Officer of Danville Independent Schools.

“I can’t tell you how much this recognition means to me,” Gunter said. “Of all the work I do, NBCT professional learning is the most transformative for those I work with. I will never forget how when I was first certifying, simply reading the questions made me realize changes I needed to make in my teaching. I credit the NBCT process for making me a reflective educator with a lifelong commitment to learning. I’m thrilled that all the newly certified teachers will be joining me on this amazing journey.”

Gunter has been a National Board Certified teacher in the area of Adolescent and Young Adulthood English Language Arts since 2007. When the Kentucky National Board Teacher Network was formed, she helped the board shape its bylaws and served as advocacy chair.

Over her many years of providing NBCT candidate support and professional learning, Gunter has worked with NBCT candidates in 14 of the 16 certification areas at various developmental levels.

Angie also serves as a Disciplinary Literacy Cadre Leader for Green River Regional Educational Cooperative ED and is an adjunct in the education department at Western Kentucky University, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses.

A past president of the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English and state ELA Lead for Student Achievement Partners, Gunter has worked in several roles connected to professional learning across the state including Classroom Teachers Enacting Positive Solutions, the National Math and Science Initiative, Hope Street Teacher Fellows, Advance Kentucky, and Kentucky Literacy Intervention Project.
