The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its first Citizens Academy this spring. Sheriff Brad Younmgan said the academy is designed to enable the public to understand the role and purpose of the DCSO in the community by giving participants an in-depth look at the agency’s operations.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about what the Sheriff’s Office does,” Youngman said. “For instance, many people think that we are just a law enforcement agency that is assigned to the rural parts of the county. But there is much more to the Sheriff’s Office than that. We not only have our 5 constitutional duties in addition to police work, but our area covers all of the county from Veterans Boulevard to Utica, Knottsville to Curdsville, and everything in between.”

The program will last 8 weeks, beginning on April 9 and concluding with a graduation banquet on June 4. Classes will be held each Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m.

The topics will range from overviews of patrol, investigations, and court security to lessons on traffic stops and crime scenes. Students will also participate in a ride-along, firearms familiarization, and facility tours while hearing from several representatives from different areas within the Sheriff’s Office.

Youngman said the Daviess County Detention Center and the Daviess County Fire Department will each host one of the classes so participants can become more familiar with their operations and see how each of these county agencies work together to serve the people of Daviess County.

Participants must be Daviess County residents who 21 years of age or older. They cannot have any convictions for a felony or domestic violence, nor can they have had a DUI within the past 2 years. They also cannot have any pending criminal charges or protective orders. Applicants will be asked to confirm that they are willing to submit to a background check as part of the application process.

There is no cost to participate in the program. Those interested in applying can do so online here. Applications will be taken until March 25.
